About Data Privacy Day

Join us on Sunday, January 26, 2025 for our Privacy Day 2025 event at the Carnegie Library of Pittsburgh (CLP). CMU is once again partnering with CLP to celebrate International Data Privacy Day by bringing practical advice on protecting privacy online to the general public, off the university's campus. The Privacy Day event will take place from 10am-2pm. The event is open to the public, and no registration is required. Refreshments will be provided.

Data Privacy Day is an international effort to empower and educate people to protect their privacy and control their digital footprint. For more information, please visit StaySafeOnline.org.

Jan 26, 2025: Privacy Stories with CMU Privacy Profs

Preschool Privacy Story Time (Professor Lorrie Cranor)
A reading of Prof. Cranor's original story for young children.

11:30am - 12:00pm

Elementary School Privacy Story Time (Professor Lorrie Cranor)
A reading of The Eyemonger by Daniel J. Solove.

12:30pm - 1:00pm

Privacy Stories from Our Everyday Lives (Professor Sarah Scheffler)
A talk about the ways your personal data is being collected every day.

10:00am - 2:00pm

Privacy Clinic (CMU Students and Faculty)
Learn how to protect your privacy.

10:00am - 2:00pm

Refreshments
Free refreshments provided while you learn about privacy.

The event will take place in the Gallery and Graphic Novels Room on the first floor of the Carnegie Library of Pittsburgh-Main (Oakland). There will be greeters and signage to help find your way around.

Privacy Story Times

introduce privacy to your children

Professor Lorrie Cranor will lead two story times to introduce privacy concepts to kids of all ages. The Preschool Privacy Story Time will feature Professor Cranor's original privacy story for young children and discuss where children can find privacy in the world around them. Following, the Elementary School Story Time will include a reading of The EyeMonger by Daniel J. Solove and discussion about privacy and why it is important.

Talk: Privacy Stories from Our Everyday Lives

Professor Sarah Scheffler will share real-life anecdotes of personal data being collected and used in unexpected ways. This informational talk is targeted to a general audience of adults and teens.

Learn how to protect your privacy

Our Privacy Day event will feature a Privacy Clinic. Attendees of the Privacy Clinic will learn more about how they can protect their privacy during their daily usage of digital technology. CMU’s information privacy and security students and researchers will provide information and answer your questions about privacy risks and remedies concerning many topics, including:

  • Phishing (Sara Patel)
  • Google privacy settings (Khinezin Win)
  • iPhone privacy tools (Joanne Pon and Lily Klucinec)
  • Privacy on Instagram (Aseem Shrey)

  • Communication Privacy (Baichuan Gong and Ruiyang Liu)
  • AI & Privacy (Ashutosh Sahu)
